Quebec remains the only Canadian province with a province-wide winter tire mandate.
According to the Canadian Automobile Association, all-season tire compounds begin to stiffen below seven degrees Celsius, reducing traction on both dry and wet pavement regardless of whether snow is present. For most of southern Ontario, daily temperatures begin dropping consistently below that threshold in late October or early November. Completing the swap before that transition gives drivers the full performance benefit of their winter tires from the first cold day forward.
Ontario drivers also have a financial reason to make the switch. Provincial regulation requires auto insurers in Ontario to offer a premium discount to policyholders who equip their vehicles with four winter tires bearing the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol. The specific discount amount, eligibility period, and application process vary by insurer and individual policy. The Insurance Bureau of Canada has described the typical discount range as three to five percent of the annual premium, though drivers should confirm the exact terms with their own insurance provider.
Tire condition is an important factor in the swap timeline. Technicians performing a seasonal tire swap typically inspect tread depth, sidewall condition, and tire age before mounting. The Tire and Rubber Association of Canada recommends that winter tires maintain a minimum tread depth of 4.8 millimetres, well above the 1.5-millimetre provincial legal minimum, because deeper grooves are necessary for displacing snow and slush from the contact patch. If an existing set of winter tires has worn past that recommended depth or shows visible signs of aging, the driver will need time to purchase replacements before road conditions change, which is easier to manage earlier in the season when inventory is more readily available.
First-time winter tire buyers in particular benefit from acting early. Selecting the correct tire size, choosing between studless and studded compounds (studded tires are prohibited in Southern Ontario under provincial regulation), and confirming whether the vehicle requires a tire pressure monitoring system sensor reset after the swap are all decisions that take time and are best handled without seasonal pressure.
