Bulgarians are voting in a presidential runoff amid regional security threats and economic worries. Acting President Iliana Yotova faces opposition candidate Andrey Gyurov. Yotova, who could become Bulgaria’s first elected female president, narrowly beat Gyurov in the first round. The first round saw record low turnout, with only 23% of voters participating. Bulgarians are voting against a backdrop of economic hardship and increased drone attacks on Black Sea shipping. Yotova, running as an independent, is endorsed by the Moscow-friendly Progressive Bulgaria party. Gyurov, a pro-Western economist, supports Ukraine and criticizes the government’s stance on Russia.
