A federal judge in Los Angeles is set to hear arguments over whether the Department of Justice can bar California from counting the ballots of of some 20,000 people until it can confirm they are U.S. citizens. The hearing Tuesday comes as mail-in voting is underway, a week before the Nov. 3 conclusion of midterm elections. The Trump administration sued California officials, accusing them of failing to review the names it alleges are likely noncitizens illegally registered to vote. California officials argue the lawsuit came too late and could disenfranchise legitimate voters. The dispute centers on the accuracy of the Justice Department's list, with conflicting testimony about the feasibility of setting apart flagged ballots for citizenship checks.
