The Environmental Protection Agency’s response to the disastrous 2023 East Palestine train derailment will be investigated after dozens of residents of the small town on the Ohio-Pennsylvania and Vice President JD Vance requested the review. The Inspector General of the EPA announced the investigation Tuesday to assess the agency’s response to the worst rail disaster in more than a decade. Resident Jami Wallace said she is glad the concerns raised by people who live in the area are getting attention again. She has tracked more than 80 cases of cancer among residents.

A crowd of South African men ran through the streets of Johannesburg in purple swim briefs to raise awareness about prostate cancer. They participated in the Hollard Daredevil Race on Friday. The annual event highlights what researchers say is now the most common cancer in South Africa. Organizers noted that prostate cancer is rarely discussed openly among South African men despite their high risk. A 2023 study found that fewer than one in four Black men in the Free State province had heard of prostate cancer before their diagnosis. Participants including cancer survivors encouraged others to get screened.
A first-of-its-kind cancer vaccine is helping significantly reduce the chances that melanoma patients' tumors return. Drugmakers Moderna and Merck announced the results Thursday. The vaccine was custom-brewed for each patient to match their tumor. It teaches the patient’s immune system to watch out for and attack any cancer cells that start forming again. Adding it to a standard post-surgery treatment reduced by 42% the risk of melanoma returning two years after surgery, according to the most advanced study to date.

Pope Leo's doctors confirm that his lung cancer was localized, and no further treatment is needed. The Vatican released a statement Wednesday. Pope Leo returned to the Vatican on Saturday after having the lower lobe of his right lung removed. The surgery confirmed he had lung adenocarcinoma, the most common type of lung cancer. His personal physician, Dr. Luigi Carbone, and surgeon, Dr. Stefano Margaritora, said tests on the tissue removed during surgery confirmed the initial diagnosis and that the cancer had not spread. A subsequent oncology assessment confirmed no further treatment is necessary.
Prince Harry is saying he wants to mend his relationships with Prince William and King Charles III. Harry discussed his “complicated” family ties in a GQ magazine interview recorded in late September and published Tuesday. He emphasized how much he wants reconciliation, saying resolving family issues is the most important thing in a world that already has so much drama. Harry, Meghan, and their children returned to the U.K. in late August, six years after establishing a home in California. Harry, who is fifth in line to the throne, has said he wishes to spend more time with his father, who is undergoing cancer treatment.
