A bench trial has begun for a Washington state man whose Capitol riot case was dismissed by the Trump administration but who remains charged with federal firearms offenses stemming from his later arrest near former President Barack Obama’s home. Taylor Taranto was arrested near Obama’s Washington, D.C., property on the same day in June 2023 that President Donald Trump posted on social media what he claimed was the former president’s home address. Investigators found two guns, roughly 400 rounds of ammunition and a machete in Taranto’s van after he showed up near Obama’s home. U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols will decide the case without a jury.
