Polls have opened for midterm local and regional elections that could significantly impact British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Starmer's Labour Party is bracing for losses in elections across England, Scotland, and Wales. The polls opened at 7 a.m. Thursday and will close at 10 p.m. Results will start coming in overnight with most due by Friday afternoon. While local elections usually focus on community issues, opponents have framed this as a referendum on Starmer. His popularity has dropped due to missteps and economic struggles. Analysts suggest Labour could lose many seats, with Reform UK and the Green Party expected to gain ground. A poor result could lead to leadership challenges for Starmer.

The Supreme Court has struck down Louisiana’s second majority Black congressional district in a decision that could open the door for Republican-led states to eliminate Black and Latino electoral districts that tend to favor Democrats. The court’s conservative majority Wednesday found a district represented by Democrat Cleo Fields relied too heavily on race. The decision weakens a landmark voting rights law’s protections against discrimination in redistricting. It’s unclear how much is left of the Section 2 provision, the main way to challenge racially discriminatory election practices. The 1965 voting rights law was the centerpiece legislation of the Civil Rights Movement and succeeded in opening the ballot box to Black Americans.

Bulgarians are heading to the polls for the eighth time in five years hoping to finally elect a parliament that will be capable of resolving the prolonged political impasse that has gripped the country. Sunday's snap vote follows the resignation of a conservative-led government amid nationwide protests in December 2025 that drew hundreds of thousands, mainly young people, to the streets, calling for an independent judiciary to fight widespread corruption. Polling stations close at 8 p.m. Preliminary results are expected on Monday.
