The most prominent glaciers in Colorado thinned dramatically over the past year due to record low mountain snow and record warm temperatures. Similar glacier loss has been observed in Europe and across the western United States. Research from Dan McGrath at Colorado State University shows the Andrews Glacier thinned by more than 12 feet in this single year, the Arapaho Glacier lost nearly 10 feet, and the Isabelle Glacier lost about 6.5 feet. Another of Colorado’s perennial snowfields popular among hikers and skiers, St. Mary’s, melted completely in September. McGrath says Colorado’s remaining glaciers may not have much time left.
