South Korea’s main conservative party has nominated former Labor Minister Kim Moon Soo as its presidential candidate. The People Power Party says Kim won the party ticket to run for the June 3 election during a party primary that ended Saturday. Observers say Kim will likely try to align with former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo to unify behind one of them in a bid to boost prospects for a conservative win against liberal front-runner Lee Jae-myung. The election was arranged after conservative President Yoon Suk Yeol was removed from office in early April over his ill-fated imposition of martial law.

U.S. Vice President JD Vance has met with the Vatican’s No. 2 official after a remarkable papal rebuke of the Trump administration’s crackdown on migrants and Vance’s justification of it. His Saturday appointment was with the Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Pietro Parolin. There was speculation he might also briefly greet Pope Francis. The 88-year-old pope has sharply cut back his agenda while recovering from pneumonia, but has begun to resume some official activities. Vance, a Catholic convert, was spending Easter weekend in Rome with his family and attended Good Friday services in St. Peter’s Basilica on Friday after meeting with Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni.
