A quieter Preakness Day is underway at Laurel Park. Previously a somewhat rowdy event with throngs of fans and live music on the infield, the second race of the Triple Crown is being contested in a more subdued atmosphere this year at Laurel. That’s because Pimlico in Baltimore is being rebuilt. Laurel has a rich horse racing history. But its future is in doubt. It may be converted into a training facility. Attendance for Saturday’s race has been capped at 4,800. There’s no possibility of a Triple Crown this year because Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo isn’t running in the Preakness. Instead the morning-line favorite was Iron Honor at 9-2.

Maryland officials are considering changes that could impact the Triple Crown schedule by moving the Preakness Stakes to three weeks after the Kentucky Derby. Adding a week would try to address concerns about the short turnaround time between races, which has led to fewer Derby winners participating in the Preakness and thus a lack of Triple Crown possibilities. The current five-week span between the Derby and Belmont Stakes has been in place since 1969. Some trainers believe even three weeks may not be enough for horses to recover.

Iron Honor is the morning line favorite at 9-2 in a wide open Preakness this weekend that does not include Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo. There’s no telling who will be the bettors’ choice by the time the race actually starts Saturday at Laurel Park. Taj Mahal at 5-1, Chip Honcho at 5-1, Incredibolt at 5-1 and Ocelli at 6-1 were also among the favorites following Monday’s draw, but none have particularly short odds in what could be the largest Preakness field in 15 years. The last time 14 horses made it to the starting gate was in 2011.
