A law enforcement official says the shooter who opened fire in a classroom at Virginia’s Old Dominion University in an attack being investigated as an act of terrorism had a gun with an obliterated serial number. That could complicate efforts to determine how a man with a felony conviction obtained a firearm. The official says investigators will try to re-surface the number in order to trace the gun. The official spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the investigation. The FBI identified the shooter as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, a former Army National Guard member who pleaded guilty in 2016 to attempting to aid the Islamic State. FBI officials said ROTC students subdued and killed Jalloh to stop the Thursday shooting.

Police are responding to reports of an “active shooter” at a synagogue outside Detroit, where smoke is billowing from the roof. WDIV-TV reports that a truck crashed into the Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, on Thursday. Footage from the scene shows dozens of police vehicles surrounding the building. The Jewish Federation of Detroit advised all Jewish organizations in the area “to go into lockout protocol — nobody in or out of your building.” The Oakland County Sheriff’s office says authorities are clearing the building. About a dozen parents sprinted to collect their kids from an early childhood learning center inside the building after getting approval from police.

A federal judge is hearing arguments about whether a competency evaluation is needed for the leader of the cultlike Zizians group that has been linked to six deaths. Jack LaSota, a transgender woman who goes by “Ziz,” was charged with illegal gun possession by a fugitive after her arrest last year. Her lawyers asked a judge Thursday to order a psychological evaluation, citing reasonable cause to believe she is incompetent to stand trial. Authorities have called LaSota the apparent leader of a group tied to six deaths in three states.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom says there's no imminent threat to the state from Iran. ABC News says the FBI has warned California that Iran could send drones to the West Coast in retaliation for war. President Donald Trump was asked about it Wednesday at Joint Base Andrews. He says, “It's being investigated.” Newsom says California and various agencies plan for worst-case scenarios. Police in Los Angeles and San Francisco say they are monitoring world events for any risks to their cities.

The Israeli military says it is dropping charges against five soldiers who were accused of sexually abusing a Palestinian detainee in an encounter partially caught on camera. The army announced the decision at a time when time when much of the country’s attention is focused on the war with Iran. The leaked video of the abuse was aired last year by Israel’s Channel 12 and purported to show an incident in which the soldiers sodomized the Palestinian detainee from Gaza. Israel’s move to arrest the soldiers in 2024 prompted fury from hard-line ultranationalists. Members of Israel’s far-right government called the investigation into their conduct an affront to their service.
