Rabbi Elie Abadie, who left Lebanon over 50 years ago, remains deeply connected to his Lebanese roots. He cherishes Lebanese music and cuisine, and speaks a mix of Arabic and French with his siblings. The once-thriving Lebanese Jewish community has largely faded from memory, but recent events have brought them back into focus. In September, Israel agreed to release five civilians its military detained in Lebanon in exchange for Lebanon's help in finding the bodies of Lebanese Jewish leaders abducted in the 1980s. Abadie, now based in Dubai, hopes to one day return to Lebanon and reopen Beirut's central synagogue.
