Voters in more than 20 states will be faced this year with new laws for registering to vote and casting ballots. Nearly 40 laws are taking effect for the first time in this year's midterms, mostly in Republican-controlled states. Many of the laws mirror changes President Donald Trump tried but failed to implement at the national level, including voter ID rules or requirements for people to show documents proving U.S. citizenship when registering to vote. Many GOP-led legislatures began passing restrictive voting laws after Trump's false claims of widespread fraud in his 2020 loss to Democrat Joe Biden. The American Civil Liberties Union’s Voting Rights Project says Trump’s attacks on elections are “deeply damaging.”
