A jury in Virginia is deliberating in the trial of an alleged Islamic State militant accused of helping plan a deadly suicide bombing at a Kabul airport during the U.S. military’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. Jurors heard attorneys' closing arguments on Tuesday for Mohammad Sharifullah's federal trial on one count of providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization resulting in death. President Donald Trump heralded Sharifullah's capture during a speech to Congress last year. Approximately 160 Afghans and 13 U.S. service members were killed in the attack on Aug. 26, 2021, at an airport entry point known as Abbey Gate. Defense attorneys argued Sharifullah gave a false confession to FBI agents.
