There is a long-running discussion about the role that religion can play in enhancing personal well-being and lowering the risk of mental health problems. A positive view of religious faith’s relation to mental health is shared by several prominent U.S. organizations, including the National Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health America. The American Psychological Association takes a nuanced approach, citing the vast variety of religious and spiritual beliefs and practices. It evokes the capacity of religion and spirituality “to do both good and harm.”

Pope Leo XIV is following in the footsteps of his spiritual father, St. Augustine. He is making a pilgrimage to the archaeological ruins of eastern Algeria where the fifth century titan of early Christianity lived, died and wrote some of the most important works in Western thought. Leo is flying Tuesday to Annaba, the modern-day Hippo. It's is a spiritual homecoming for the American pope given its ties to Augustine. Leo arrived on Monday on the first-ever papal visit, against the backdrop of the U.S.-Israel war in Iran and feud with President Donald over his calls for peace.
