A new program in Ocean City, Maryland sets out to provide hope and healing through art.

Organizers said the creative process is being used to enhance physical, mental and emotional well-being for those on the Eastern Shore.

Debbi Dean-Colley is the Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator at the Art League of Ocean City. She organized the new program called “Art and Soul,” adding the new classes are meant for anyone who needs help turning a new page.

“It’s geared toward someone that is struggling perhaps or maybe facing an addition or a loved one of an addiction,” said Dean-Colley. “Loss, an illness, someone just seeking some healing.”

Nearly a dozen artists and novices turned out to learn how to make journals. It’s the first of the new series of classes.

Guest speaker Michelle Schacter opened participants’ minds with a whiff of some essential healing oils. She taught them the benefits of the healing tool. Schacter is also a wellness advocate for Doterra.

“I think it’s very important to find tools to help us get through life,” said Schacter.

Dean-Colley said the idea of using art to heal is truly a personal one.

“It’s helped me heal through some losses in my life,” Dean-Colley said. “And I thought, ‘why not?'”

But why art?

Dean-Colley said there’s no judgement — just creativity, love and freedom of expression. It seemed to resonate with those present at the first event.

The class is free. Organizers hope a grant will keep it that way so everyone who needs the therapy is able to receive it. A $10 donation is suggested.

All ages are welcome; class size is limited to 20. Pre-registration is required.
