April is Autism Awareness Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in 68 children are affected by autism. Chances are, you know someone on that spectrum, so it’s not a bad idea to educate yourself on autism so you’re better able to support that person if they need it.
Kathy Snyder, whose son has autism, and David Woods, the Development Directer with Autism Delaware, join us in the studio to tell us more.
Kathy talks about her 20-year-old son Austin who she says is “her hero.” Kathy also discusses how important it is to have structure in their home. For example, he wants to know ahead of time what he is going to be eating that day and he cannot eat the same thing to eat twice.
She also talks about how rough it was for Austin to go to school because she said that administrators really do not know how to react when Austin is having a bad day. Sometimes it is just too loud for Austin or too noisy, or maybe he just needs a break.
David talks about how Autism Delaware has a whole calendar of events for the month of April which they are calling “30 Days of Awareness.”
