Lyme Disease
If you spend a lot of time in the great outdoors, Lyme Disease—an infection caused by being bitten by an infected tick—is something to watch out for.
Lyme disease is an infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, a type of bacterium called a spirochete that is carried by deer ticks. An infected tick can transmit the spirochete to the humans and animals it bites. Untreated, the bacterium travels through the bloodstream, establishes itself in various body tissues, and can cause a number of symptoms, some of which are severe (aldf.com).
Lyme disease is most common on the east coast, and is even considered abundant the more north you travel. There are several signs and symptoms of this disease and they typically occur in three stages which makes it even more difficult for doctors to diagnose.
