With all this wind and cold we’ve had on Delmarva, you’ve probably found yourself blinking and wiping your eyes after being outside.
However, for some people, that’s a year-round problem. It’s from a condition called dry eye syndrome and Dr. Catherine Smoot of Chesapeake Eye Center in Salisbury and Berlin stops by the studio to tell us all about it.
Dr. Smooth says dry eyes occur when your tear glands don’t produce enough tears to lubricate your eyes. This condition can be uncomfortable and painful. It can be caused by both medical and environmental factors.
Dr. Smoot says 15% of the population over 60-years-old will have dry eye syndrome and women experience symptoms more then men.
Symptoms of Dry Eye Syndrome:
- Redness
- Irritation
- Burning
- Tears
Treatments include better eye hygiene, artificial tears, and for more severe cases there are gels and ointments.
