Summer is winding down and it’s almost back to school time.
That means back-to-school shopping, open houses, teacher visits, and lining up before and after-school care.
We’re talking about an active environment that provides homework help so you don’t have to deal with it after a long day. We’re learning all about Chesapeake Martial Arts.
Jim and Kim Heaney opened up a martial arts school in West Ocean City in 2005.
“By the end of the first year we doubled our space in west ocean city and we maintained that for the next ten years basically,” Jim says.
Now, Chesapeake Martial Arts can be found in Ocean Pines in a 12-thousand sq. ft. facility. With the expansion in space, they have also expanded their programs including an after-school program.
Once the kids arrive to the facility after school, they get a snack and homework help.
“So, the parents come in and pick them up at 6 o’clock, take them home, they can have a relaxing dinner and not fight with them to get their work done,” Jim says.
Martial arts is taught to the kids in the after-school program twice a week. Other activities include learning games, playground time, and arts and crafts.
“The only time they are sitting down is when they are doing their homework,” Jim says.
Kim says school is their number one priority.
“It’s a very well rounded program so, if they’re not doing well in school, we won’t let them test for their next belt,” Kim says.
Chesapeake Martial Arts also has a tournament team that goes to nationals every year.
