Nearly 30 million adults in america suffer from chronic sinus disease or sinusitis.
That means chronic congestion that causes difficulty breathing through the nose, and pain and swelling around the eyes, cheeks, nose, or forehead.
It’s probably safe to say, a majority of those people have tried every over-the-counter medication available with no significant improvement. New technology is available to get chronic sinus sufferers breathing easy again. It’s called sinuplasty.
Dr. Michael Kelleher tells us all about this less invasive procedure to help people with sinus problems.
Sinuplasty is a small balloon that is advanced into the sinuses. Sinuplasty is used to treat patients with chronic sinus disease.
The advantages of Sinuplasty vs. conventional sinus surgery is that the normal tissue is preserved and the healing time is much quicker. Most patients return to their normal activities within 48 hours.
Dr. Kelleher shows us the tool and Jimmy helps inflate the balloon and talks about the procedure steps.
“A soft flexible guidewire is advanced into the sinuses. The guidewire has a light on the end to help the doctor confirm access to the blocked sinus. Next a small flexible balloon is advanced over the wire. The doctor then inflates the balloon to expand the opening of the sinus. The sinus will remain open after the balloon is deflated and removed allowing the sinus to drain normally,” Dr. Kelleher says.
This procedure can be done right in the office at Eastern Shore ENT.
