Medical Science professionals have made great strides in managing and treating epilepsy in children.
One of those professionals is Dr. Harry Chugani, Director of Pediatric Neurology at Nemours/Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children. He says children come with a much richer diversity of patient problems, and with more problems comes more urgency because they are still developing. One of the ways he’s combatting these problems is with the Katzin Diagnostic & Research PET/MR Center. The technology allows for surgeons to do PET and MR at the same time. Not only does this create a more concise image, but it makes it so children only have to go through one sedation.
Throughout the year–Dr. Chugani says he meets many families who have children with epilepsy. He says the best thing that any parent can do is document their children’s symptoms.
“The one thing I always tell the parents is if their child has a seizure please video it!” Dr. Chugani says, “It’s very helpful for me when the parents come in and say my child just had a seizure and I say what did it look like and they kind of say well I can’t really describe it because I was panicking by that time so I think it’s really important…”
