The roof of a home is very important when it comes to keeping us dry and safe during a storm.
Peninsula Roofing tells us all about how important it is to keep your roof well-maintained, whether it’s residential or commercial property.
If your roof is in good condition, you have nothing to worry about when a storm arises. However, when the roof is not well-maintained, that is when problems can arise, and a little wind could lead to big issues.

If you’re worried your roof may not be in the best shape, Sean Fahey with Peninsula Roofing says there are a few things you can be on the lookout for.
“With a residential roof, the biggest problems you’re gonna run into – assuming that it’s been properly installed – would be around vent pipes, would be old and aged shingles, and would be general drainage, so in the valleys of the roof you want to make sure they’re clear of debris so that water can flow and get off the roof as well. The shingle roof relies on both the roof and gravity to stop water from coming into your building,” Sean says. “So as long as the water can get off the roof, generally you are going to be in decent shape.”
Commercial properties are a little different.
“On a commercial roof, you can sometimes tell that there are issues before the roof fails. If there are several areas where the roof is wet or soft when you walk on it, that can be a sign that moisture has gotten into the roof system and has weakened it,” Sean says. “A lot of times, you’ll see areas of the roof that aren’t adhered and they kind of billow a little bit in the wind. That can be an issue as well.”
Sean says it’s important to maintain your roof year-round so that when a storm comes through, you are not worried about last minute repairs.

“There’s always minor housekeeping that can be done,” Sean says. “You can make sure that the air conditioners on the roof are secured on a shingled roof and you can make sure the gutters are clear so that it can handle the volume of water that you typically get during a hurricane in this area.”
After the storm passes, Sean reminds us about the importance to check the roof.
“Panels can blow off air conditioners and the air conditioners themselves can topple over and puncture holes in the roof. There may be signs that the roof lifted, but didn’t quite come off that should be repaired before does fail,” Sean says. “On a shingle roof, you want to make sure that the tabs aren’t missing and that you haven’t lost large areas of the roof. As long as you catch it early enough, it’s typically fairly easy to repair.”
If your roof needs closer inspections, Sean recommends leaving it up to the professionals.
