Think about it. Your feet make up 20% of your body, yet they hold the weight of the other 80% of your body.

Your feet are important, so you need to take care of them. Dr. Trina P. Monis with Thomas Podiatry and Associates tells us about preventing problems from happening and addressing the problems when they do happen.

“You’re on your feet all day long, we get up we go to work, we do our activities but most people don’t really consider that, you know.. they do take their feet for granted,” Dr. Monis says.

Dr. Monis also tells us that seemingly small problems can turn into serious health conditions, especially during the summer months. Everyone walks around barefoot in the summer, and it really takes a toll on our feet. We also have to be careful not to step on glass or things that could cause serious injury while being barefoot.

Dr. Monis reminds us that another problem comes from flimsy flip-flops.

“Now there are nice supportive flip-flops and sandals out there that are better quality as opposed to the $3 flip-flops that you get at a department store, but that can cause a lot of pain,” Dr. Monis says. “A lot of times people get what’s called plantar fasciitis. If they have a weak tendon in their foot and ankle, it can cause it to collapse even more if their foot is not being supported.”

Dr. Monis says plantar fasciitis can be treated with stretching exercises and physical therapy, but can also require more invasive treatments.

People with diabetes and peripheral vascular disease are the most susceptible to foot problems. Dr. Monis reminds us of the importance of washing our feet and drying them.
