8-month-old Charlotte has been called a miracle and that’s because Charlotte was born with no kidneys.
Charlotte has fought hard and overcome many obstacles already, but still has a long road ahead of her. Charlotte and her mother Meghan Rice, along with Nicole Scharf with the National Kidney Foundation of Maryland, join us in the studio to share Charlotte’s amazing story.
Meghan said about two weeks before Charlotte was born, she had an ultrasound done. During that ultrasound, doctors found out that Charlotte had no kidneys. Many babies that do not have kidneys, do not survive that long in utero and usually pass early on in pregnancy.
“If they do survive the birth, they only live a couple minutes to a couple of hours,” Meghan says.
However, Charlotte was born and despite the odds and minimal amount of amniotic fluid, she was born crying – which was a pleasant sound for Meghan and her husband.
Charlotte has had a few setbacks in her eight months of life, but is doing well. Charlotte has to be 26 pounds before she can have a kidney transplant.
There are kidney walks coming up in our area. On Sunday, April 30, the walk starts at 11 am at Cape Henlopen State Park and on Sunday, May 7, the walk starts at 10 am at Winterplace Park. Money raised at the walks go to the National Kidney Foundation to provide services to those who need it right on the shore.
