Today on DelmarvaLife –

Chesapeake Housing Mission started with a simple idea: we should all view our blessings as gifts to be passed to those who are not as fortunate. They since carried on that mission, providing vital housing repair services to low income families in the region. This weekend will mark the organization’s 500th build. We talk with Executive Director of CHM, Don Taylor, Past chair of the Board of Directors, Allen Brown, and Current Chairman of The Board of Directors, Vernon Brown about what it means to provide such a vital service.
If there’s one thing to count on it’s the outdoor beauty of Delmarva, including the waters that surround it. Normally, this time of the year, the Assateague Coastal Trust is gearing up for an event called “Float for The Coast.” However, like many other events, it had to be cancelled. But, that doesn’t mean the goal of the event is not being reached. We talk with Kathy Phillips, Executive Director of Assateague Coastal Trust, to find out about the alternative.

Here on Delmarva, we have plenty of cats and dogs who are looking for their happy ending. There’s never been a better time to adopt. Check out some super sweet faces in today’s Pet Connect.

I think it’s fair to say, we’ve all received a degree in “master of adaptation” following this spring and summer. And those who, pre-covid, spent their days bringing the community together, they continue to do so despite all the challenges and changes. We talk with Mary Anne Knight, Owner of
Frantic Fret Music Store and Thrift Shop
about Open Mic Nights and how they’re working to ensure that the show goes on.

Sticking with the theme of Open Mic, Donna Fanelli of Milton, is a performer at one of those nights. We talk with her about some of the challenges she’s faced as an artist during COVID. Plus, she’s giving us a very unique performance, one that requires the use of hand pans…yeah, you’re not gonna want to miss this.

It’s been a wild week. And in the wake of destruction and heartache, it might feel impossible to find the good. But, even in the midst of chaos, we strongly believe there is good to be found. And we are going to do our best to show you… starting with a Delaware State Trooper, who stopped to help an elderly driver change a tire. You’re gonna find that story of good (and much, much more) in today’s “All That is Good.”

We have the best of Philly without even having to visit the city. Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches are melt-in-your-mouth fantastic and take only 10 minutes to make! The best part? Cheese Whiz. Check out the recipe below:
What You’ll Need
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 2 onions, thinly sliced
- 1 1/4 pounds beef top round, thinly sliced (see Note)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 4 hoagie rolls, split
- 1 cup Cheez Whiz, melted
What to Do
- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat oil until hot. Add onions, and saute 6 to 8 minutes, or until onions are tender. Transfer to a bowl and set aside.
- Add beef to skillet and sprinkle with salt and black pepper; saute 3 to 5 minutes, or until no pink remains in beef. Transfer to a cutting board and cut steak into very thin strips, almost shaved.
- Place steak on hoagie rolls, top with onions and drizzle with melted cheese, serve Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches immediately.
Notes
- The easiest way to get thinly sliced beef top round is to ask the butcher at the supermarket to do it for you.
- Not a fan of Cheez Wiz? Some people prefer to make these Philly Cheesesteak Sandwiches with Velveetva Cheese instead.
