More than 1,000 officers from Delaware, Maryland and other states, along with members of the community that Heacook served, were in attendance for the funeral, which was held at Emmanuel Wesleyan Church in Salisbury.

The Rev. Christopher de Barge of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Salisbury officiated at the service, which included guest speakers  Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan and Delaware Gov. John Carney.

"Two states are grieving the loss of one of our true heroes," Hogan said.

Carney, who spoke immediately after Hogan, said, "I can assure you that the heart of every Delawarean is heavy in solidarity with all of you."

Other keynote speakers included Delmar Police Cpl. Kevin McCahill, as well as family and friends, such as Heacook's longtime friend Kevin Maloney.

"I'm sure that everyone has a different way of remembering Keith, but I'm sure that we can all agree that he was an amazing and genuine person who truly cared about the people around him," Maloney said. "My family and the town of Delmar were privileged to have Keith as our dearest friend and our protector."

Following the funeral, police escorted Heacook's hearse back to Short Funeral Home in Delmar with a private interment to follow.

Authorities say Heacook, 54, was attacked on April 25 by Randon Wilkerson, 30, of Salisbury, after responding to a report of a fight in Delmar. A witness reported that Wilkerson slammed his foot repeatedly on Heacook’s head while he lay unconscious.

Wilkerson, who is now charged with murder in connection with Heacook's death, is also accused of attacking an elderly couple.

Heacook, 54, and a 22-year veteran of the Delmar Police Department, was married and leaves behind a 12-year-old son.
