BALTIMORE (AP)- Some state lawmakers are pushing for a plan to combine the flagship University of Maryland, College Park with the University of Maryland, Baltimore.
Supporters say the merger would lead to a closer partnership and more innovation.
Legislation sponsored by Sen. Bill Ferguson and Del. Curt Anderson would move the state university system's headquarters from Adelphi to Baltimore and establish a ventures office to help faculty and students market their inventions commercially.
The Board of Regents, which oversees 12 of the state's public universities, met Wednesday to discuss the matter. However, spokesman Mike Lurie says no consensus was reached.
A similar effort five years ago was rejected by the regents, and drew criticism from Baltimore leaders, who thought it would shift power away from the city.
