SALISBURY, Md. – A 75-year-old man has died after suffering injuries in a house fire Thursday afternoon in Salisbury, according to Maryland fire officials.
The fire was reported around 12:35 p.m. in the 500 block of Tangier Street Firefighters from the Salisbury Fire Department and neighboring departments arrived to find flames inside a one-story, five-unit masonry row home.
Crews found the man inside the unit where the fire started and removed him from the home. He was taken to a local hospital before being flown by the Maryland State Police Aviation Command to a Baltimore-area burn center, where he later died.
The Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Salisbury Fire Department Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire originated in the victim’s living room. The cause remains under investigation, though investigators said smoking materials have not been ruled out. Officials said smoke alarms were present and activated during the fire.
Two people living in an adjoining residence were displaced by the fire and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the official cause and manner of the man's death.
The Office of the State Fire Marshal, the Salisbury Fire Department Fire Marshal's Office and the Salisbury Police Department continue investigating the incident.
