GEORGETOWN, DE - The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) has announced the awarded contractor bid to complete the Georgetown-Lewes Trail in Sussex County.
The Georgetown-Lewes Trail first opened in October 2016 and provides pedestrians, runners, cyclists, and dog walkers with an opportunity for low-stress outdoor recreation. As of 2024, 11 miles are in use. Once completed, it will be the longest trail in Delaware at 17 miles, according to Delaware Greenways.
The final expansion project, awarded to a contractor on May 9, is slated to add just over 6 miles to the existing trail from Fisher Road in Milton to Airport Road in Georgetown. According to DelDOT, the final phase will include construction of a multi-use 10-foot wide trail along the state-owned decommissioned railroad as well as intersection improvements.
An elevated boardwalk, safety fencing, drainage improvements, kiosk installations, site amenities, and signage are also included in the project’s description.
The final phase was first announced in December 2024.
Public DelDOT files show that, out of five contractors, the final phase project was awarded to Atlantic Contracting & Material Company, Inc. at a bid of $17,495,207 on Friday.
The project’s contracted time to complete is 397 calendar days, according to DelDOT documents. A spokesperson with DelDOT tells WBOC that a project schedule is not currently available as it was just awarded Friday.
