SUSSEX COUNTY, DE - Drivers in Sussex County are finding relief as gas prices have significantly decreased, with many stations now below the $3 mark. The downward trend in fuel costs is a welcomed change for many, and it's gaining attention across the region.
Delaware, on average, had a gas price of $3.05 per gallon Tuesday. In comparison, it's an over 15 cent drop from last week's $3.21 per gallon and a substantial improvement from the highest recorded prices last year, on June 22nd of 2022, which stood at an average $4.99 per gallon.
AAA tells WBOC attributes the decrease in gas prices to the drop in crude oil prices, which have fallen below $90 a barrel. This, combined with the changing seasonal demand and fewer drivers on the road, has played a pivotal role in bringing down gas prices.
While there have been concerns regarding the impact of the conflict in Israel on gas prices, Israel is not a significant exporter of oil, as opposed to Russia and Ukraine which are both major exporters. Their conflict leading to a spike in prices last year.
As a result, AAA says gas prices are not expected to be directly influenced by the war unless it spreads to larger oil-producing regions.
The Liberty Station at Milton Quick Stop had their unleaded regular prices sitting at 2.87 today.
Some drivers are cautiously optimistic about the trend, like Milton Driver Patrick Molloy
"I doubt we see under $3 for very long, so hold on to your hats." said Molloy.
Others, like driver John McDonnell, are just happy to see them low once again,
“I think it’s fantastic, I mean what’s there to think, under 3 dollars, that’s like amazing anymore, I mean I remember when it was a lot cheaper.” said McDonnell.
