Golf Carts

SUSSEX CO., DE - The Delaware State Police say they have been investigating multiple golf cart thefts throughout Sussex County.

In a social media post shared Monday, police advise neighbors to secure their golf carts and storage buildings to deter potential thieves.

Stanley Sigda of Millsboro says his son caught his neighbors cart being stolen, and while it was thankfully returned, he thinks people need to take the issue more seriously,

“When will they learn? These golf carts are important to these people, that’s their only means of transportation if they don’t have a car. To deliberately take something that doesn’t belong to you? It doesn’t make sense.”

The common key on many golf carts, and it's ability to be rolled and pushed, makes it a vulnerable target for theft.

Jacob Adams from Indian River Golf Carts says it's a common issue -- and they have been encouraging extra safety measures.

“We’ve been pushing people when they purchase their golf cart, to go ahead and put an uncommon key into it, a unique key, so some average joe can’t come up put a key in it and drive off with it.”

Adams explained another preventative measure can be a wheel to pedal security bar, which has it's own lock separate from the common one.

Residents are asked to report suspicious activity, and State Police say assistance in the investigations are appreciated. Those with information can provide it to police anonymously by calling 302-752-3798 or by sending the Delaware State Police a private Facebook message.
