Delaware is seeing an increase in traffic fatalities compared to this time last year, according to new data from the Delaware Department of Transportation.

As of June 23, 54 people have died in crashes on Delaware roads in 2026 — a 23% increase from the 44 fatalities reported at the same point in 2025.

Of those killed this year, 50 were Delaware residents. Vehicle occupants account for the largest share of fatalities, with 30 deaths reported so far — up 43% compared to this time last year.

The data shows roadway departures remain one of the leading types of deadly crashes, with 25 reported fatalities connected to vehicles leaving the roadway, a 32% increase from 2025.

Fatalities involving bicyclists have also increased, with four deaths reported so far this year compared to one at the same point last year. Pedestrian fatalities have decreased by 15%, with 11 reported in 2026.

DelDOT says reducing serious crashes and deaths on Delaware roads requires everyone to do their part. The agency is reminding drivers to “Be Del-AWARE” by buckling up, slowing down, moving over for emergency vehicles, driving sober and watching out for pedestrians.

DelDOT is also asking residents to take the “Hero Toward Zero” pledge, a commitment to help make Delaware roadways safer.

Traffic fatality statistics are unofficial and may change as crash investigations are completed.
