Dorchester County EMS Bike Team In Full Effect

(WBOC).

CAMBRIDGE, MD. - First responders in Dorchester County are rolling with some new wheels.

The Dorchester County EMS bike team is ready to roll. There are 10 members of the team where two trauma professionals and two medical professionals go out to each scene.

The director, Juanita Darby, says the bicycles let first responders get through crowds, buildings, and even stairs, faster.

The recruiters go though weeks of rigorous training. Such as, a 20 mile bike ride and learning to bike up and down stairs.

The bikes also come equipped with defibrillators, oxygen tanks, and trauma kits.

Darby says, "We saw the need. There are so many street events, festivals and a couple of triathlons and bike events here. We saw the need that it was taking the ambulance more time to get to the patient and we thought we could access them soon if we had a quicker way."

Darby says this program was funded entirely though grants and donations. And now they have a trailer to fit the bikes and supplies. She says they're always looking for more members.

Donations towards the program can be made to Dorchester County and earmarked to the bike team.
