Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk Break

REHOBOTH BEACH, DE - Construction crews working on demolition at the One Rehoboth Avenue project hit a snag Friday when a piece of construction equipment fell slightly through the storefront boardwalk.

The back left tire of a Genie boom lift appeared to have cracked through the boards in front of the site of the former Grotto’s Pizza and Sirocco Motel on May 2. A witness says she snapped a photo of the minor snafu around 8 a.m. Friday morning.

"They were pretty flummoxed at the time on how they were going to get it out," Jesse Berdinka, who took the photo, said.

Chopper 16 was overhead in the afternoon to see that the equipment had been successfully lifted, the hole covered, and work back on track.

Rehoboth Beach’s City Manager Taylour Tedder confirmed to WBOC that the boards in front of the storefronts are private property, so the City luckily incurred no cost in the incident. Tedder also said the boards at the site were already set to be replaced as part of the project.

Demolition at the One Rehoboth Avenue site is expected to wrap up by May 15.
