Massey's Landing Vehicle Submerged

LONG NECK, DE - Multiple fire companies and law enforcement responded for a water rescue at the Massey’s Landing Public Boat Ramp near Long Neck on Wednesday night.

According to the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company, first responders were called to Long Neck Road and Massey’s Landing on May 14 just before 11 p.m. on reports of a submerged vehicle.

Indian River firefighters say it appeared a utility van drove off the ramp of the Massey’s Landing Public Boat Ramp and was submerged in Massey’s Ditch. First responders say they received reports that the vehicle’s driver was able to exit the van before leaving the area.

About 20 divers from the various first responding entities were deployed, according to officials, for an expected search and recovery, vehicle extrication, and incident mitigation.

Because of the tidal current and conditions, the vehicle salvage operation was delayed and placed under the coordination of Delaware State Police and Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC), according to officials.

The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company says recovery efforts resumed Thursday morning. DNREC Marine Police and Delaware State Police are investigating the incident, according to the fire company.

According to a spokesperson with DNREC, all involved with the incident have been accounted for and no one was injured when the vehicle went into the water.
