ONANCOCK, Va. - Chief Mike Rydberg with the Onancock Volunteer Fire Department says a driver was rescued after their car was submerged in the Chesconessex Creek.
He says first responders were notified of the incident around 10:20 p.m. on Friday, August 21. The Onancock and Tasley Volunteer Fire Departments were both dispatched to the Chesconessex Creek on Northside Road in Onancock for reports of a submerged vehicle. Units from Onancock and the Department of Public Safety also responded.
Upon arrival, Chief Rydberg says a victim was found in the water about 80 yards from the end of the dock. A bystander in a kayak was helping the victim stay afloat. A rescue swimmer was deployed and brought the driver of the car back to the dock, where he could be rescued.
The driver sustained injuries that were not life threatening.
Chief Rydberg advises that the vehicle is still submerged in the creek and boaters are urged to stay clear of the area to avoid damage to their vessels until the car can be recovered.

The Onancock VFD leadership say they would like to thank the good samaritans who stepped in to assist the driver before first responders arrived.
