CAMBRIDGE, Md. - Dorchester County Sheriff James Phillips, Jr. has lost his bid for reelection in Tuesday night’s Maryland primary race after serving as Sheriff for nearly 25 years.

Phillips lost the Republican primary for Sheriff to challenger Mark Lewis on Tuesday, June 23. Lewis is a member of the Linkwood-Salem VFD and spent over 30 years as a Cambridge Police Officer, including as Chief of Police.

Sheriff Phillips began his career with the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office in 1977. He was elected Sheriff in 2002.

With 97% of precincts reporting, Phillips trailed Lewis by a difference of 1,744 votes as of 10:20 p.m.

Mark Lewis will now face off against Democratic challenger Christine LaMonica for the Sheriff’s Office in November.
