KENT CO. - The Delaware Emergency Management Agency announced plans for an emergency siren test on Tuesday, July 7, at 7:20 p.m.
It is a quarterly test of the Salem/Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations Alert and Notification system that continually monitors the integrity of the siren system.
There are 37 sirens in the first state within a ten-mile radius of the generating systems in New Jersey. DEMA officials say the sirens cover an area north from Delaware City, west to Middletown, and south to Woodland Beach.
They say sirens will be activated from three to five minutes that day, followed by a test message of the Emergency Alert System on local radio. The sirens being tested are the same ones used to alert the public in the event of an actual emergency at the generating stations. They say these sirens are designed to alert people who are outdoors.
In the event of an actual emergency, DEMA says the sirens would sound for a steady three to five minutes that would alert locals to turn on their radio for an Emergency Alert System station with critical information or instructions. They say other alerting methods that target cell phones would also be use during an actual event.
