Salisbury Crash Delmar Carter Figgs

SALISBURY, MD - The Salisbury Police Department has released further details on the Saturday morning crash that claimed the life of a 16-year-old Delmar High School football player and left another teen in critical condition. 

According to police, at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning, officers responded to the area of S. Salisbury Blvd and Lloyd Street on reports of a car accident. There, police found a car that had crashed into a telephone pole on the east side of S. Salisbury Blvd (Rt. 13). Both the 17-year-old driver and a 17-year-old passenger were responsive, while another 17-year-old and a 16-year-old were found outside the vehicle in need of immediate medical care. Both were taken to Tidal Health Peninsula Regional.

The 16-year-old, identified as Carter Figgs, of Delmar, died from his injuries sustained in the crash. The injured 17-year-old remains in critical but stable condition, police say. 

An investigation by the Police Department and the Maryland State Police revealed that the 17-year-old driver was speeding southbound on Rt. 13 when the accident occurred, according to police. Authorities say the driver was unable to control the car, crossed into the northbound lanes of Rt. 13, and struck the telephone pole.. Authorities say the driver was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and arrested. 

The 17-year-old driver, whose identity has not been released, has been charged with the following:

Criminal Negligent Manslaughter by Vehicle, Homicide by Motor Vehicle, Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Driving under the Influence of Alcohol Per Se, Driving While Impaired by Alcohol, Reckless Driving, Negligent Driving, Exceeding Maximum Speed Limit, Failure to Drive Right of Center, Failure to Control Speed to Avoid Collision.

The driver has since been released to the custody of his guardians, according to police.
