SMYRNA, Del.- Smyrna police announced Tuesday that departmental investigators have recently reached a breakthrough in a human remains investigation they have been conducting.
In September 2019, police found the remains of a young girl in September near the Little Lass softball fields. In November of 2019, police released facial reconstruction images of what the girl may have looked like when she was alive.
Police said the child was dead for several weeks, if not longer, when she was found.
The girl was between the ages of 2 and 5. She also had slightly wavy brown hair and was Caucasian or Hispanic. She may have suffered from a chronic disease.
On Tuesday, police said persons of interest in the case are currently in custody out of state. Police said the investigation remains very active, with search warrants being executed, evidence being processed, and interviews being conducted. As such, police said releasable information remains limited.
The FBI is assisting Smyrna police in the investigation.
"If and when the persons of interest are transferred to our custody, we will announce their full details as well as any crimes they are being charged with," police said in a release.
