SEAFORD, Del. – Some Sussex County schools are expanding their security protocols.

The Seaford School District recently announced it acquired OpenGate Weapons Detection Systems – an enhanced security screening technology.

“We have worked hard the last year in updating our security to make sure we are keeping our students, families, and community safe,” Director of Student Services Gary Zoll said. “We feel like this is another step forward for our district in making sure events that we hold are safer for our entire community.”

Zoll added the gates are not a response to an event, but a preemptive measure to ensure safety,

“We have not had issues per say, but we’ve obviously looked around the state and the country, and seen things that have happened. This is more along the lines for us to be able to protect our community, and push it as that safety for events.”

District Superintendent Dr. Sharon DiGirolamo says the systems embody a safe and accessible experience – and the portable nature of the equipment makes it an ideal tool for securing large events without inconveniencing attendees. The school has purchased two of these systems, and one will be used starting at November 3rd's Varsity Football Game. Visitors will be required to go through the scanners, that will be at the ticket booth entrance.

Unlike traditional metal detectors, OpenGate Systems do not require passage in a single-file line, easing the flow of foot traffic into events. Those going through the detectors will also be able to hold onto personal items like phones, glasses and money clips, according to a press release.
