DOVER, Del. - Powerful storms tore through Dover, leaving visible damage on the city’s historic Green.
A large section of an American elm estimated to be more than 100 years old came crashing down during the storm. Other branches and leaves were also scattered throughout the area, covering nearby streets and sidewalks.
Tom Smith, a Downtown Dover business owner and historian, said some of the trees on the Green have stood for more than a century.
"When I arrived this morning, of course, I was sad to see the damage on the Green because those trees out there are historic trees," Smith said. "Some of them have been here over 100 years, including an American elm tree that survived the elm disease."
Despite the damage to the trees, there were no reports of significant damage to surrounding businesses or buildings.
