SUSSEX CO. - Sussex County is preserving their forests while still allowing for new developments in southern Delaware.
The County Council adopted a measure that adds preservation requirements for forest land where development is proposed.
They say under the new rule, areas with existing forests can continue to be developed, but a certain percentage has to be preserved. They say that percentage could be as much as 50 percent in rural areas.
The rule also establishes penalties for clear-cutting forests from properties slated for development, as well as mitigation requirements for situations where more trees are cut than is allowed by law.
These rules take effect three months from today or any new subdivision applications.
