Deadly Crash

SMYRNA, DE– The Delaware State Police (DSP) reported an active investigation into a fatal crash that took the life of a Smyrna woman Saturday night.

Police say at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 16 a trooper in a Chevrolet Police Tahoe was driving northbound in the left lane of South Dupont Boulevard, approaching Spring Meadow Drive.

The Tahoe was followed by a Toyota Highlander and a Kia Sorento.

A pedestrian, a 26-year old woman from Smyrna, reportedly crossed into the roadway from the Economy Inn, located east of the northbound lanes, entering the path of the police Tahoe.

The Tahoe struck the pedestrian, who landed in the left lane and was then run over by both the Highlander and Sorento, according to a press release.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. On Monday, December 18th, police identified the victim as Jakyrah Wayman, of Smyrna.

The trooper, a 23-year-old man from Smyrna, was transported to a nearby hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The drivers of the Highlander, a 25-year-old female from Milford, and the Sorento, a 32-year-old man from Smyrna, were not injured, according to the release.

The northbound lanes were closed for approximately three and a half hours while police investigated the crash and cleared the roadway.

DSP Troop 3 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate. Troopers ask any witnesses to contact Master Corporal W. Booth at (302) 698-8451.
