Venezuela’s government has repeatedly broken its promise to provide vaccines against HPV for free, and many public-school teachers ignore the requirement to teach sex ed. President Nicolás Maduro’s administration claims the well-being of youth and women is a priority. But parents are the ones who have to talk to their kids about the human papillomavirus and pay for the vaccines, which is out of reach for most in the troubled South American country. Most HPV infections are asymptomatic and go away without treatment. But some can lead to genital warts and cancers, primarily of the cervix, but also of the anus, penis and throat.

Columbia University President Minouche Shafik's leadership is under fire. She has been criticized for her recent testimony to Congress over growing concerns about antisemitism on college campuses — and her handling of subsequent on-campus protests. More than 100 protesters at Columbia were arrested last week after Shafik asked New York City police to clear a pro-Palestinian encampment. The move did little to stop new protests from springing back up at Columbia and on campuses nationwide. University faculty have filed a motion of censure against her, and a number of state and House Republicans have begun calling for her resignation.

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey says the state will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to weigh in on an appeals court ruling that allowed a transgender athlete to compete on her middle school teams. A 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel ruled 2-1 last week that West Virginia’s transgender sports ban violated Becky Pepper Jackson’s rights under Title IX, the federal civil rights law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in schools. Jackson, 13, has been taking puberty-blocking medication and publicly identified as a girl since she was in the third grade. The court ruled in favor of the American Civil Liberties Union, its West Virginia chapter and the LGBTQ interest group Lambda Legal.

A jury has rejected a woman’s lawsuit seeking tens of millions of dollars against Virginia’s largest school system over allegations that she was raped multiple times as a middle schooler. The woman sued Fairfax County Public Schools under Title IX, a law guaranteeing girls and women equal educational access. The lawsuit alleged school officials at a Reston middle school ignored her complaints that she was sexually assaulted as a seventh-grader inside and outside of the school in 2011 and 2012. Lawyers for the school system argued her claims were fabricated. The jury deliberated several hours Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday before rejecting her claims.

Some public school teachers could gain new powers to bring concealed guns into Tennessee schools. The legislation given final approval this week comes a year after a fatal shooting at a private Nashville elementary school. A previous law already allowed some private school teachers to have guns. The new measure would expand that to public school teachers who undergo training, clear background checks and get school permission. The Tennessee measures comes just days after Republican governors in Iowa and Nebraska signed laws that could expand the potential for armed personnel in schools. Meanwhile, lawmakers in some Democratic states are pursuing more gun restrictions.

An effort to limit diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives is gaining momentum in state capitals and college campuses. Tennessee became the latest state to act this week as the Republican governor signed a law prohibiting banks from considering a customer's participation in DEI training. That came shortly after the Democratic governor of Kansas allowed a bill to become law barring higher education institutions from using DEI statements in employment and admissions. A budget bill given final approval in Iowa seeks to ban DEI offices and programs in higher education. Republicans in about two dozen states have filed bills this year targeting DEI efforts.
