For another consecutive year, striped bass, or rockfish, in the Chesapeake Bay are showing poor reproduction rates according to studies in Maryland and Virginia.
Consideration of a proposed Virginia bill that would fund a study of menhaden in the Chesapeake Bay has been pushed to at least next year.
The Lewes Board of Adjustment voted 3-1 on Tuesday in favor of the Historic Preservation Architectural Review Commission's authority over the location of the reel. The vote decided the reel is a city structure and HPARC has jurisdiction over all city structures.
The Lewes Historical Society was told by the city to take down it's Menhaden Fishing Net Reel, but the big wooden wheel may not have to come down after all. According to city code, the reel does not meet zoning restrictions. The Historical Society says the big wooden structure is important to Lewes' history, and members are working with the city to get those restrictions changed.
