Anthony Fauci again faces questions from Senate Republicans about pandemic origins

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the U.S. scientist who helped lead the nation's COVID-19 pandemic response, is facing off with a Republican senator probing the origins of the coronavirus. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky subpoenaed Fauci to appear Wednesday before a Senate committee, part of Paul's yearslong accusations that the now-retired infectious disease expert had lied about the pandemic. Fauci has called that “preposterous” in prior hearings and his lawyers likewise call the allegations “absolutely baseless.” Many scientists believe the coronavirus likely jumped from animals to people in nature. Paul champions a theory that it may have leaked from a laboratory.

Eight years after deadliest antisemitic attack in US history, Tree of Life rabbi bids farewell

Rabbi Jeffrey Myers is retiring from Tree of Life Congregation in Pittsburgh, which he led through the aftermath of the deadliest antisemitic attack in U.S. history. Eleven worshipers from three congregations were killed in the 2018 attack. Myers, who struggled to pray after the tragedy, found solace in the Book of Psalms. He plans to return to New Jersey to be near family and focus on personal healing. During his tenure, Myers helped the congregation navigate the pandemic, the trial of the gunman and plans for a new building. Members praise his leadership and dedication. The new building, including a memorial, is expected to open in 2028.
