BERLIN, Md. -- Trash, mainly empty alcohol containers, often line the side of Cathell Road in Ocean Pines. It's caused one local organization to take action and has stirred up some frustration among neighbors.
Andy Blizzard founded Restore the Shore, an organization that cleans up litter throughout Worcester County.
Blizzard walked along the side of Cathell Road, a trash bag in one hand and a trash grabber in the other. He did so for about an hour on Wednesday, November 2nd. Picking up beer cans, wine bottles, liquor bottles and any other trash strewn along the side of Cathell Road.
This wasn't the first time Blizzard cleaned up that roughly 300 foot section of Cathell Road.
"We come out here every three to six months, this area is pretty known for a lot of litter," said Blizzard.
And on Wednesday, there was plenty of litter for Blizzard to pick up.
Despite the efforts to keep the road clean, it appears to be an almost never ending problem. Less than 24 hours after Blizzard was at Cathell Road cleaning up, there were already beer cans and other trash on the side of the road.
However, Blizzard has seen some improvement over the last two years.
"When we first originally cleaned up this road, it was a total of eight 55-gallon trash bags," said Blizzard. "Yesterday, we picked up two fifty five gallon bags, so between the two year period it went from eight to two, so it is getting better."
One person who's fed up with the persistent litter problem on Cathell Road, is Dale Cathell.
"It’s constant, year round," said Cathell. "People in my opinion are very disrespectful of other peoples property."
He says it's especially bad during the summer.
"During the summer months every time I go to mow, I got to walk the front or the roadside of my yard and pick up all the trash before I can cut my own grass," said Cathell.
Cathell says people not chucking garbage onto his front lawn would save him from an unwanted chore.
"It doesn’t take that long for a person to throw it on their floor board or have a little plastic bag inside their vehicle," said Cathell. "Saves me from having to spend an extra 10 to 15 minutes picking up trash off my front yard."
He has one simple message.
"Don't be a litterbug," said Cathell.
A littered roadside that many are hoping is eventually litter-free.
