Protesters Line Route 50 Urging Drivers to Reconsider Ocean City Vacation

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -

The group says they are in part protesting what they believe to be inaction by the Town of Ocean City following the controversial boardwalk vaping arrest that took place there in June.

Members say they hope those traveling Ocean City for their Labor Day holiday weekend will see their protest and reconsider going to the resort town.

"Those officers ought to be suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. It's normal, it's what's done in many jurisdictions in Maryland. Second, we've asked that the Ocean City Police not be able to investigate themselves," said Carl Snowden, who serves as convener of the Caucus of African-American Leaders.

"We want to remind people that Ocean City is where this despicable act occurred. We want to take this as an opportunity to remind people, particularly people of color,  where they're going," Snowden continued.

While Ocean City's Mayor Rick Meehan, who spoke with WBOC earlier in the week says he was disappointed in what he has heard from the group.

"I'm a little disappointed in the fact that you know, I did meet with many of the members of this group on July 19th. And they laid out some of their concerns. Some we could answer, some we couldn't."

The Mayor continued "But they gave us some challenges to meet and we've been meeting internally trying to address some of those issues and they're very well aware of that."

After the protest got underway on the shoulder of Route 50, the event's organizer says Maryland State Police had protesters move after receiving calls that protesters were dangerously close to the roadway.
