Wednesday: Partly cloudy with some showers and thunderstorms, mainly in the evening. Highs in the low 90s. Heat index near 100°F. Chance of rain 30 percent.
Thursday: Partly cloudy with some showers and thunderstorms, mainly in the evening. Highs in the low to mid 90s. Heat index 100° to 105°F. Chance of rain 30 percent.
Friday: Partly cloudy with afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Highs around 90°F. Chance of rain 40 percent.
FORECAST DISCUSSION
Normal high: 84°F. Normal low: 64°F.
Yet again, Delmarva is going to be in an unsettled pattern in the coming week.
A broad upper ridge is situating itself over the Mississippi River Valley, which will place Delmarva and much of the northeastern United States in overall northwesterly flow, which will allow for several impulses of energy to swing over our region and bring chances for thunderstorms, some of which could be strong to severe, with all types of severe weather possible, including damaging winds, hail, and even a couple of tornadoes.
The general pattern on Tuesday through Thursday will be for afternoon highs to reach the low to mid 90s. With plenty of humidity, it will feel like 100° to possibly 105°F at times, with the hottest conditions expected Tuesday and Thursday.
The heat and humidity will be fuel for showers and thunderstorms that will be triggered by impulses of energy from the northwest. While timing is never a certainty in this kind of a pattern, on average we're most likely to see showers and thunderstorms in the evening times, with most of the day being hot and humid with no rain. We don't want to rule out a stray shower or thunderstorm popping up during the day, so keep the eyes to the sky!
Delmarva is under a Level 1 "Marginal" threat for severe weather on Tuesday, and a Level 2 "Slight" threat on Wednesday through Friday.
A more potent cold front is expected to approach in the northwest flow late Thursday into Friday. We have a better chance for showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon hours on Friday.
Then the ridge over the center of the nation will break down and the upcoming weekend will be much quieter, with partly to mostly sunny skies, and more comfortable afternoon highs, in the mid 80s on Saturday, and possible the upper 70s on Sunday.
In the long range, temperatures are expected to be above normal, and precipitation below normal for Sep 7 - Sep 13.
In the Tropics: Tropical Depression "Five" has formed off the coast of Louisiana. It is expected to become Tropical Storm "Edouard" later Monday or early Tuesday. It will make a landfall somewhere in southeastern Texas or southwestern Louisiana sometime Tuesday evening, bringing heavy rain to the region. "Five" is not a threat to Delmarva at this time.
Remnants of "Dolly" are located near Puerto Rico, and are expected to bring gusty winds and heavy rain to parts of Turks and Caicos, as well as the Bahamas in the coming days. These remnants are not expected to redevelop into a tropical system at this time.
The Atlantic hurricane season ends on November 30.
